Hire a Hut was born from a simple idea: extra space should be comfortable, durable and stylish. Too many cabins out there looked rough, felt cold or weren’t built to last. We wanted to change that by creating quality cabins that are warm and dry, built properly and look great in any backyard.

Filling a stylish gap in the portable cabin market

After years of witnessing soaring housing prices, Hire a Hut founders Josh and Chantelle saw too many people settling for extra space solutions that lacked warmth, character or quality.

With a background in building and a shared passion for design, we set out to create premium portable cabins that combine practicality, style and solid craftsmanship, built locally.

When it came to naming the business, Josh and Chantelle wanted something that would stand out in a sea of ‘cabin’ companies. Something that felt uniquely Kiwi, warm and fun.

The word “Hut” came up, and it resonated. It’s grassroots, cosy, and for Chantelle, deeply personal. Her grandparents had a granny-flat at the end of her grandfather’s workshop that everyone in the family called ‘the Hut’. Over the years, it became somewhere family members stayed while getting back on their feet or saving for a home – a place of safety, warmth and cosiness, which we wanted to give our customers too.

That’s how Hire a Hut was born: a name that rolls off the tongue and describes what we do – offering Kiwis well-built, comfortable and stylish huts they can hire or buy.

Meet our team

Josh began building cabins in 2016, supplying them wholesale to other companies. But he soon realised there was a better way of delivering quality, consistency and service.

In 2020, Josh and Chantelle began selling and hiring cabins directly to customers, bringing every part of the process in-house. Unlike many cabin companies who outsource production, we manufacture our cabins right here in Whangārei, employing local tradespeople and sourcing materials from local businesses. It’s what makes Hire a Hut unique – quality and service all stay in our hands, from the first cut of timber to final handover.

Now, every Hire a Hut cabin is built to exceed Healthy Homes insulation standards, using the same heat-loss calculation as a new build, and carefully finished inside and out. Whether you’re after a sleepout, home office, Airbnb hut or just more room for family, our cabins are built to make life easier. And because not everyone wants to buy a cabin outright, we offer flexible options – from quality cabin rentals to WINZ-approved cabins for hire.
