Rent to buy cabins in NZ – what is rent to buy and are there other options?

A lot of people search for rent to buy cabins without knowing it’s really a finance agreement. We break down what rent to buy means, why Hire A Hut keeps things simpler with hire or buy outright, and how to work out which one suits you.

Hire a Hut doesn’t offer rent to buy, but we do offer both hire and buy, and either way you get the same quality build. Hiring can be suitable for a short-term need, or when you need extra space urgently. Buying is a longer term addition to your property. Rent to buy can sometimes be a hidden hire purchase type agreement, and we don’t think that’s right for many customers. Here’s the difference, and why we’ve chosen to keep things simple.

What is rent to buy, really?

Rent to buy (sometimes called rent to own) is effectively a hire purchase agreement. A finance company owns the cabin while you pay it off, usually through fixed weekly payments over a term of anywhere from three to seven years. Those payments include interest and fees, just like a car loan or any other consumer credit contract. In New Zealand, hire purchase is regulated under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act, which means there are rules around disclosure, affordability checks, and what happens if payments are missed.

It’s not a bad option for everyone. But it is a finance commitment, not just a simple payment plan, and it’s worth going in with eyes open.

Why Hire A Hut doesn’t offer rent to buy

Offering something like rent to buy means registering as a Financial Service Provider (FSP) and meeting the compliance that comes with being a lender, which isn’t the business we’re in. It would take our focus away from building great quality cabins.

That said, we know finance is the right fit for some people. We’ve partnered with a few lenders who can provide finance against a cabin, so if that’s what you’re after, we can point you in the right direction. You’ll still need to meet their lending criteria, but it means you can access finance without us needing to be the lender ourselves.

What we offer instead

Hire – If you need extra space now, or only for a while, hiring gets you a warm, well-built cabin without any big upfront cost or finance agreement. You pay for what you use, for as long as you need it. Hired cabins can be kept over longer terms too, they’re not only a short term

Buy outright – If you’re after a long term addition to your property, buying gives you the same quality build, at one clear price, with nothing owing to a finance company. It’s yours from day one.

Either way, every Hire A Hut cabin is built to the same standard, properly insulated, and backed by the same care that goes into everything we make.

Which option suits you?

If your need is short-term, flexible, or you’re not sure how long you’ll need the extra space, hiring makes the most sense. If you’re planning to keep the cabin long-term, whether as a sleepout, home office, or extra accommodation, buying outright is usually the more straightforward path.
